Careers over Cocktails
Thursday 13 August 2015
Hellenic Republic Kew, Level One

AHEPA Youth members and friends enjoyed an exclusive night of cocktails, conversations and canapés at Hellenic Republic Kew's upper function centre in August 2015, as the graduate employment and internship application period approached its conclusion.

Joining us were our highly esteemed guest mentors for an intimate and informal night of networking to discuss their greatest career lessons and highlights - you can read our mentors' profiles below.

George Sykiotis

George Sykiotis is the Managing Partner of MAdE Establishment. At the age of 23, whilst at Melbourne University, George opened his first cafe in Lonsdale Street. Within 12 months the cafe became a focal point for the legal fraternity. In 2005 he approached George Calombaris with the offer of the vacant premises in the Herald and Weekly Times Building which would be The Press Club.
From that point onwards the partners have never looked back: Hellenic Republic, Lucy Liu, The Smith, Lupino, and Jimmy Grants are just some of their ventures. Sykiotis' key role in the partnership is to source the right partners, develop the vision, assess financial viability, locate the site, engage the architects and builders to deliver the venues on time and on budget, and oversee the day-to-day finances and operations of MAdE Establishment.

Jane Hume

Jane Hume currently works as a Superannuation Policy Strategist at Australian Super. Jane also sits on the Board of Victoria's Royal Children’s Hospital and, until recently, Federation Square. With a background in investment banking and funds management, Jane has worked in a number of senior roles for global investment banks Rothschild and Deutsche Bank, as well as Private Banking and Investment Research at the National Australia Bank. Jane is a Coalition Senate candidate for the upcoming Australian federal election.

Kathy Tsaples

Kathy Tsaples is the owner of Prahran Market's Sweet Greek, cookbook author, celebrated cook and key fundraiser for Peter MacCallum Cancer Research. After a career in finance, a difficult battle with breast cancer gave Kathy the courage to pursue her dreams and focus on a lifelong passion of hers - making and selling traditional Greek family food.

John Pesutto MP

John Pesutto MP spent most of his professional life in the private sector practising law and successfully ran his own small business. Prior to his election as the Member for Hawthorn - and AHEPA's local State MP - John was Senior Legal Counsel to the Premier of Victoria the Hon Dr Denis Napthine MP. Upon his election to Parliament, John was immediately appointed Shadow Attorney General. As Shadow Attorney General, John is committed to ensuring that Victoria is a place where the rule of law is upheld and the community is protected by a strong law and order framework.

Despina Ganella

Despina is a postdoctoral fellow at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, where she works on adolescent anxiety.

In addition to this, Despina is an active science communicator, regularly visiting schools to reach out to the community and educate the public about neuroscience and mental health. She is also passionate about equality and diversity in science and serves on the Equality in Science Committee.
Despina is actively involved in the Greek community and serves on the HACCI young professional and operations committees and enjoys sharing ideas and communicating across different industries.

Despina holds a PhD (Neuroscience) and a Bachelor’s degree of Biomedical Science (Hons) from the University of Melbourne. She has also completed a Graduate Certificate of Commercialisation at the Melbourne Business School.

Nicole Condos

After 10 years in the events and celebrity PR industry, Nicole launched her own publicity and event management business, Material Girl PR, in 2011.

From Lisa Marie Presley to Ronan Keating, Paris Hilton to Kim Kardashian, Nicole has been a part of PR campaigns that most professionals can only dream about. Working with the AA List of film, TV, sport, fashion & music, she quickly went from being on the V.I.P. lists, to being the one who decides whose name actually makes those lists.
Nicole is no stranger to taking an unknown and throwing it into the spotlight. Candles by Nikoletta celebrates Nicole’s adoration for the beauty of Greece and Cyprus. The candles are infused with key scents that bring the aromas from the kitchens and cake stores of the Mediterranean into local homes.

In a testing time for Greeks economically, Nicole wanted to inspire creativity with her candles and drive others to celebrate Hellenism, regardless of whether they're Greek, Australian or a candle lover. Her ongoing involvement in the Greek community includes teaching at Omiros College, freelance writing for the Neos Kosmos and Opa Magazine and radio hosting at 3XY.

Nicole was the recipient of the HACCI Young Achiever Award in 2014 and continues to work on Material Girl PR event and publicity campaigns, along with music recording projects as a singer.
